Overview.  Spring is softball season will be our most active time of year.  We will have a comprehensive program for girls from Kindergarten through 8th grade.  The recreational divisions will be:
Kindergarten and 1st Grade:  This program is mostly focused on learning to throw, catch, field, and hit.  There will be more practice time than game time with fun softball related games that teach the fundamentals in a fun active environment.  This age group is an in-town league with no out-of-Needham travel, and is designed to start off more like a t-ball program.  Over the course of the spring season this age group will transition to coach pitch.
2nd, 3rd, and 4th Grade:  In this program players will continue to develop basic fundamental skills of throwing, catching, fielding, and hitting.  There will be more practices than games to facilitate skill development.  This program will be an in-town, non-travel league with all games played in Needham.  Pitching will move from the initial coach pitch to player pitch, as soon as possible, with modified rules to avoid excessive walks.
5th and 6th Grade:  In this program the girls will be playing real games with ASA umpires.  The girls will be pitching and we will have frequent practices including some clinics with professional instructors.  At this point, in addition to the instruction provided by Needham Baseball & Softball, there will be girls taking private lessons on their own with pitching coaches or hitting coaches or catching coaches.  Needham Baseball & Softball will help provide contacts for families looking for this kind of instruction.
7th and 8th Grade:  In this program the girls will be playing real games with ASA umpires.  The rules will closely resemble high school rules to help the girls take the next step and also prepare to try out for the high school teams.
Travel 10U, 12U, and 14U:  From the group of recreational players, one team at each grade level will be formed to play travel softball against teams from the towns in our area.  The schedules will be coordinated so the recreational and travel practices and games do not conflict.
Season:  The season runs from April through June with clinics in March held inside gym space.
Player expectations:  Needham Baseball & Softball welcomes all girls to participate in its program.  Any girl can play on one of the recreational teams and will see her skills develop throughout the season.
Cost:  $175/player.  For girls participating on the travel teams they may incur additional fees for uniforms if needed.
Registration: Any questions – please contact the Spring Softball Director.
