NB&S Coronavirus Response Update

Dear Needham Baseball & Softball Community,

I hope you are all staying safe and managing the quarantine in a healthy way.  I am thrilled to provide some good news.

Now that Governor Baker has released the reopening plan for MA, the NB&S Board is planning a modified in-town baseball and softball season - essentially our Spring season moved to a later date.  We don't yet have all the answers, but per State guidelines, youth sports may resume in a limited fashion in Phase 2 (no earlier than June 8) and games may resume in Phase 3 (no earlier than June 29).  We currently anticipate the modified season to start in early July and run through August, with the possibility of some practices in June.  After the registration confirmation period closes on May 29th, League Directors will modify team and coaching placement to take into account final registration numbers.  Updated team and coach information will be available in early-mid June.

The NB&S Board has been meeting regularly and is working diligently to offer families an opportunity to play baseball and softball, including:

  • Working with the Needham Board of Health to outline recommended actions for baseball / softball activities for players, coaches, umpires, and spectators
  • Reviewing equipment inventory and plans to ensure we have enough equipment to meet State guidelines for playing
  • Established a COVID-19 subcommittee to review ongoing guidance from authorities and adapt as necessary
  • Developed a process for families to register or confirm their interest in a modified season and realign teams as necessary based on interest levels

Next steps for families - time sensitive, due May 29

To ensure we are ready to play once State guidelines allow, we need you to let us know your plans.  Note that NB&S will require all participants to sign a COVID-19 waiver, and we will ask about what equipment you own, since under COVID-19 guidelines, players will not be able to share some equipment as in the past.  If you have a financial hardship and cannot afford to buy equipment for your child, please indicate your need on the registration form as NB&S will provide equipment so everyone who wants to play can do so.

Please choose only one of the options below by Friday, May 29 to indicate your preference:

1) If you have already indicated your child is not playing and have registered for a refund / rollover / donation, no further action is necessary.

2) If you are already registered for Spring baseball or softball, *click here* to confirm your child will play, sign the COVID-19 waiver, and provide equipment information

3) If you are not currently registered for Spring, *click here* to register to play in the modified season and *click here* sign the COVID-19 waiver, and provide equipment information

4) If you are registered and do not want to play in the modified season and have not indicated how you want your paid fees handled, *click here* to request a refund, apply fees to a future season, or make a tax deductible donation to NB&S

5) If you have already indicated your child is not playing in the modified season and you now want to re-register *click here* to sign the COVID-19 waiver, and provide equipment information and email us at to sort out registration and payment

If the modified season needs to be cancelled at a later date, NB&S will offer the option of a full refund, rollover of fees, or tax deductible donation.

Summer & Fall Leagues

  • Because our Spring season will be played later than normal, and the fact that many summer leagues have cancelled or not communicated clear plans, NB&S will not participate in our normal summer travel baseball program.  We will look for opportunities for tournament play (e.g. Attleboro, Stoughton).  A full refund will be provided to families who have registered for our summer program.
  • Our tournament softball program will align with USA Softball guidance, and we will communicate further on softball once we have additional information
  • Fall Baseball is currently on a normal schedule, but that timing may change depending on the timing of our modified season
  • The state baseball All-Star Tournament (ages 10, 11 and 12) has been postponed and may be rescheduled for later this summer or cancelled. We will provide more information once our Little League District makes a determination
  • We will communicate further on tournament and fall play as our plans firm up

Thank you for your patience while we have waited for guidance and planned how to offer a season for our kids.  I am pleased with the progress toward a season, and I am optimistic that the kids will be able to get on the diamonds soon.  Also, a big thank you to the NB&S Board, who are working hard to keep things moving.  I appreciate the effort and engagement from all of them.

Sincerely,

L.J. Gage

President, Needham Baseball & Softball
